What’s inside

What Mock Test 1 contains

Four PBQs open the test, then 86 multiple-choice questions cover all 27 SY0-801 objectives. The questions are separate from Mocks 2–4, so a later mock is a fresh measurement. Take Mock Test 1 before our drills and domain tests, though: they reuse some of its questions, and your results say how many questions you had already seen on this device.

The order you meet them in:

  1. Log analysis PBQ
  2. Network placement PBQ
  3. Firewall rules PBQ
  4. Tool output PBQ
  5. 86 multiple choice

Points per domain

A multiple-choice question is worth 1 point and a PBQ 2.5, so each domain’s share of the 96 points lands within a point of its SY0-801 weight.

  • 1.0 General Security Concepts15 multiple choice = 15 points16%
  • 2.0 Threats, Vulnerabilities, and Attacks21 multiple choice + log analysis PBQ = 23.5 points24%
  • 3.0 Security Architecture16 multiple choice + network placement PBQ = 18.5 points19%
  • 4.0 Security Operations21 multiple choice + firewall and tool output PBQs = 26 points27%
  • 5.0 Program Management and Oversight13 multiple choice = 13 points14%

96 points in all. Percentages are the SY0-801 domain weights from CompTIA’s published objectives; the point split is our design.

Two ways to take it

Exam mode or study mode

Take it under exam conditions to see where you stand, or work through it slowly and learn from each question as you go. You choose when you start.

Exam mode

A 90-minute countdown with warnings at 10 and 5 minutes, flag and review, and explanations unlocked when you submit. The clock keeps running if you close the tab, and time-out submits your saved answers. Use it for your first attempt, so your estimated score is honest.

Study mode

No timer. Check each answer as you go and read why every option is right or wrong before moving on. You get a percentage instead of a scaled score, because you saw feedback along the way.

How to take the free practice test

Treat it like exam day and the result will tell you something. Here is a pacing plan for the 90 minutes.

  1. Set up like exam day

Block 90 minutes in one sitting and close your notes. A laptop or desktop makes the PBQ tables easier to work with.

  2. Budget the PBQs

They come first. Allow 7 or 8 minutes each, about 30 for all four, and flag any that run long to finish later.

  3. Keep a steady pace

That leaves about an hour for 86 questions, a little over 40 seconds each. Mark each answer sure, unsure or guess.

  4. Use the review screen

It lists flagged and unanswered questions. Answer everything before you submit; a blank earns nothing.

Performance-based questions

The four PBQs in Mock Test 1

Each PBQ is a small simulation scored part by part, so every requirement, line, slot or decision you get right earns credit. Each ends with a debrief that explains every part.

The PBQs in Mock Test 1, in the order they appear. Each is worth 2.5 points in our scoring.
PBQObjectiveWhat you doCredit for each
1 · Log analysis2.5Select the log lines that show an attack, then answer questions about it. Harmless look-alike lines test how closely you read.Follow-up answer, plus your line picks (wrong picks cost credit)
2 · Network placement3.2Put each security control where the traffic it must inspect or block actually passes. There are more devices than slots.Slot
3 · Firewall rules4.1Edit a rule table where order matters and an implicit deny sits at the bottom. Test connections run through your rules to grade them.Requirement
4 · Tool output4.3Read vulnerability scan and inventory exports and decide what to do with each finding. Exposure, asset criticality and possible false positives matter, not just the CVSS score.Decision

Mocks 2–4 swap the fourth PBQ for other formats. See all six in our Security+ PBQ practice guide.

A sample Security+ question

This is what every question looks like once you answer it: a verdict and a reason for each option.

Sample question

Employees on one floor who browse to payroll.corp.example land on a look-alike portal, while employees on other floors, who use a different resolver, reach the real site. When an administrator queries the floor’s assigned internal resolver from its own console, it returns 192.0.2.44, but the zone’s authoritative server returns 10.20.1.15. Which of the following is MOST likely occurring?

Pick an answer to see why each option is right or wrong.

Takeaway: one resolver wrong, authoritative server right: suspect cache poisoning on that resolver. Sources: CAPEC-142: DNS Cache Poisoning · RFC 5452

What your free practice test results show

Your results turn one score into a study plan. Exam mode adds the estimated score and the below-target markers; the rest appears in both modes.

  • Estimated score

Our own estimate on the 100–900 scale, with the 750 line marked. It doesn’t predict an official result. How the passing score works.

  • Domain bars

Your share of points in each domain. In exam mode, a domain below its target line is marked.

  • Objectives to drill

Up to eight objectives that cost you most, each linked to its ten-question drill.

  • Lucky guesses

Right answers you marked as a guess or flagged. Review them like misses.

  • PBQ subscore

Your PBQ points on their own, with your strongest and weakest format.

  • Question review

Every question with every option explained and a debrief for each PBQ, filtered by wrong, flagged or guessed.

What to do next

After Mock Test 1: drill, retest, then the next mock

Below 750, or a domain bar far behind? Drill first. Above 750? Confirm it on a mock you haven’t seen, because one score can be lucky. Either way, these are the next steps.

Drill the objectives you missed

Ten untimed questions on one objective, with feedback after each answer. Start with the top of your “objectives to drill” list.

Objective drills

Retest your weakest domain

A 25 or 30-minute test that covers every objective in one domain, with one PBQ, so you see whether the gap has closed.

Domain tests

Keep recall fresh

Mini tests mix all five domains in 25 questions and 25 minutes; quick tests do it in 20 minutes without a PBQ.

FAQ

Free Security+ practice test FAQ

Is the free Security+ practice test really free?

Yes. Mock Test 1 stays free, including every explanation, and so does the demo. There is no sign-up and no card. Every other test is free during launch too.

How long does the free practice test take?

In exam mode, Mock Test 1 has 90 minutes, matching the exam’s time limit; the demo has 10. Study mode has no timer, so it takes as long as you want to spend on the explanations.

Is the free test as hard as the real Security+ exam?

It’s written to the same objectives and weights, with short scenarios that need careful reasoning. Its difficulty ratings are model estimates, not learner data, so treat your result as one estimate and confirm it on a second mock rather than as a guarantee.

Can I stop and finish the test later?

Your answers save in this browser. In exam mode the timer keeps running while you are away, and an expired attempt submits when you return. Study mode is untimed and can be resumed.

Where are my practice test results saved?

In this browser only. Your answers and results aren’t synced to other devices, and clearing your site data removes them, so finish your review on the device you tested on.

Which exam version is the free practice test for?

SY0-801, the version expected to launch on or around November 17, 2026. If you’re sitting SY0-701 before it retires on June 11, 2027, see our SY0-701 guide.
