The voucher

How much is the Security+ exam?

You pay for the exam by buying a voucher, then enter its code when you book with Pearson VUE. One voucher covers one attempt at one certification exam.

Will SY0-801 cost more? Nobody outside CompTIA knows yet. CompTIA’s help center says a standard voucher is tied to the exam but not to a version, so a $439 voucher bought now can be used for SY0-801 after launch, as long as you test before it expires. CompTIA’s voucher terms add that some vouchers are tied to an exam code, so check the exam named in your voucher email. The SY0-801 vs SY0-701 guide covers the launch date.

Buying safely

Where to buy a Security+ exam voucher

CompTIA’s voucher terms recommend buying from its store, from a CompTIA sales representative or from a CompTIA Authorized Partner. You can also pay when you book.

CompTIA’s store

Open the Certifications menu, pick Security+, then add a voucher or a bundle to your cart. You get two emails: an order summary, and the voucher code with its expiry date.

CompTIA store

Your employer or school

CompTIA notes that employers often buy vouchers for their staff, and schools may buy them for students. You can also buy directly from CompTIA through a sales representative. Ask before you pay yourself.

A CompTIA Authorized Partner

CompTIA names its Authorized Partners as the third safe source. Confirm the seller is authorized before you pay: CompTIA says it can’t help with vouchers bought from other companies.

Pay when you book

When you schedule with Pearson VUE, you can pay with a voucher code or a credit card. Scheduling, ID rules and online testing are in our guide to taking Security+ online.

Avoid cheap vouchers from sellers you can’t verify. CompTIA’s terms say vouchers bought from unauthorized sellers, resold or transferred can be voided without a refund, and using an unauthorized discount code can get your exam result invalidated.

Regional pricing

Security+ voucher price by country

Vouchers are country and currency specific, so buy from the store for the country where you’ll test. These are the prices CompTIA’s regional stores listed for the Security+ V7 voucher.

Regional stores, such as those for Australia, Japan, the UK and the EU, charge in local currency. In CompTIA’s emerging and global markets, the store may show an estimated local price but charges in US dollars. Pick your country in the store’s region menu to see the price that applies to you.

Academic pricing

Is there a Security+ student discount?

Yes, for students at eligible schools in the US and Canada. CompTIA doesn’t publish the student price; it appears in your cart once a verification service called SheerID confirms you’re enrolled.

Are you enrolled at an eligible school?

Yes

Verify at checkout

Eligible: students at US degree-granting Title IV universities, US high school juniors and seniors aged 16 or older, and Canadian university students. Use the student link at checkout and upload a dated school document, such as a student ID or class schedule. The price covers up to two of each exam type every six months.

No

Ask who else can buy

Schools can buy vouchers for their students at institutional prices. CompTIA also gives discounts to US federal, state and local government employees, and may give them to government contractors whose organization has an established CompTIA account. Your account must be linked to the organization.

The SheerID price is CompTIA’s best student price, so no other discount code stacks on top of it. CompTIA’s academic store also lists the United Kingdom.

If you don’t pass

How much a Security+ retake costs

Every attempt needs its own voucher, so a retake costs another $439 unless you bought Retake Assurance. CompTIA’s retake policy says it offers no free retests or retake discounts. You can book a second attempt straight away, but you must wait at least 14 calendar days before a third or later attempt.

  1. First attempt
  2. Second attempt: no wait
  3. Third attempt: 14 days later
  4. Later attempts: 14 days apart

How Retake Assurance works

Three rules from CompTIA’s voucher terms and return policy decide whether the extra $140 helps you.

  1. You must sit first

The retake only activates after you take the exam and don’t pass. If you never sit the first attempt, the retake is forfeited.

  2. Same version only

A retake voucher can’t be used on another version of the exam. Fail SY0-701 and your retake must also be SY0-701, before the English exam retires on June 11, 2027.

  3. 12 months for both

All vouchers, retakes included, expire 12 months from purchase. Leave time for study between the two attempts.

The arithmetic: Retake Assurance adds $140, and a second plain voucher costs $439. $140 is about 32% of $439, so it pays off if you think there’s roughly a one-in-three chance or more that you’ll need a second attempt. A timed free Security+ practice test before you buy shows where you stand; it won’t predict your result.

The whole bill

Security+ certification cost: five worked examples

The voucher is the only fee you must pay to sit the exam. What you spend on top depends on how you study and whether you need a second attempt.

Books and third-party courses are extra, and their prices vary; our Security+ books guide compares the main titles. After you pass, Security+ is valid for three years. Renewing through continuing education carries a $150 CE fee for the cycle, and there are other routes: see Security+ renewal and CE.

Don’t lose your voucher

Six voucher rules that can cost you money

From CompTIA’s voucher terms, help center and store return policy, checked November 7, 2026.

  • No refunds

Voucher purchases are final: no returns, refunds or exchanges.

  • 12 months to test

Vouchers expire 12 months from purchase, and the date can’t be extended. It’s in your voucher email.

  • Reschedule 24 hours ahead

The voucher terms say 24 hours; online bookings can change until the start time. Miss it and the voucher counts as used.

  • One voucher, one attempt

Each voucher works once, for one certification, and can’t be transferred after you register.

  • Country specific

Vouchers are tied to a country and currency, so buy for the place where you’ll test.

  • Retirement wins

Retirement dates override expiry dates. The help center says a standard voucher works on either version; a retake must use the version you first sat.

Spend less

Ways to pay less for the Security+ exam

The first three come from CompTIA pages we checked. None of them involves a discount code from an unknown site.

  1. Ask your employer or school

Employers and schools often buy vouchers for staff and students. Ask before you buy your own.

  2. Use military or government funding

Army Credentialing Assistance can pay up to $2,000 a year toward training and exam fees for eligible soldiers, and CompTIA offers government discounts.

    Security+ and DoD 8140
  3. Verify your student status

Eligible students get CompTIA’s student price through SheerID at checkout.

  4. Practice before you choose a retake

Take a timed mock exam first, then decide whether the extra $140 for Retake Assurance is worth it to you. Buy a bundle only if you’d use every part.

FAQ

Security+ exam cost FAQ

How much is the Security+ exam in 2026?

$439 in the US for one voucher, or $579 with Retake Assurance. Those are CompTIA’s list prices for SY0-701, checked November 7, 2026; CompTIA hadn’t listed SY0-801 prices yet. Prices differ by country.

Is there a student discount for Security+?

Yes, for eligible students. Students at US degree-granting Title IV universities, US high school juniors and seniors aged 16 or older, and Canadian university students can verify through SheerID at checkout to get CompTIA’s student price. It covers up to two of each exam type every six months.

Can I get Security+ for free?

Usually only if someone else pays. Employers and schools often buy vouchers, and Army Credentialing Assistance can cover up to $2,000 a year of training and exam fees for eligible soldiers. Free study materials exist, but the voucher itself is a paid item.

Does a Security+ voucher expire?

Yes. CompTIA vouchers expire 12 months from the purchase date, and the date can’t be extended. If the exam version retires before then, the retirement date applies instead.

Can I use one voucher for SY0-701 or SY0-801?

Yes, with a standard voucher. CompTIA’s help center says vouchers are tied to the exam but not to a version, so one bought now works for either while it’s valid. The retake part of Retake Assurance is different: it must be used on the version you first sat. Check the exam named in your voucher email, since CompTIA’s terms say some vouchers are tied to an exam code.

How much does it cost to retake Security+?

Another $439 at US list price, unless you bought the $579 voucher with Retake Assurance. You can retake once with no wait; after that, attempts must be at least 14 days apart.
