Security+ scoring

Security+ passing score in 2026: what 750 really means

You need 750 on a scale of 100 to 900 to pass CompTIA Security+®. It’s a scaled score, not a percentage, and CompTIA doesn’t publish how many questions you need to get right. Here’s what that means, and how to read a practice score.

  • Pass mark 750
  • Scale 100–900
  • Up to 90 questions
  • 90 minutes

How many questions, how long, and the pass mark

  • 750The pass mark on CompTIA’s scaled 100–900 range, for SY0-701 and SY0-801 alike.
  • 90maxQuestions, a mix of multiple-choice and performance-based questions (PBQs).
  • 90minTo answer all of them, PBQs included.
  • ≈1minPer question on average, before PBQs take their larger share of the clock.

Passing score percentage

Is the Security+ passing score a percentage?

No. 750 is a point on a scale, not a share of questions. It’s tempting to divide 750 by 900 and get 83%, but that number doesn’t describe anything on the exam.

The scale runs from 100 to 900, and the pass line sits at 750.

Three reasons 750 doesn’t equal 83%

  1. The scale starts at 100

Nobody scores zero. Even as a position on the line, 750 is about 81% of the way from 100 to 900, and that still isn’t a share of questions.

  2. Questions may not be equal

PBQs can earn partial credit, and CompTIA doesn’t publish how much each question is worth. A simple count of right answers can’t capture that.

  3. The cut isn’t published

CompTIA sets the pass mark through statistical analysis and doesn’t disclose how many questions you must get right.

Scaled scores

What CompTIA says about Security+ scaled scores

CompTIA says it uses an algorithm to turn what would otherwise be a percentage score into a scaled score, and that pass marks come from statistical analysis. Your result is compared with a fixed standard, the cut score, not with how other candidates did that day.

What CompTIA publishes

  • 750 to pass
  • 100–900 scale
  • Up to 90 questions
  • 90 minutes
  • Multiple-choice and PBQs
  • Partial credit on some PBQs
  • Missed objectives on your score report

What it doesn’t

  • Questions needed to pass
  • How many you got wrong
  • Number of PBQs
  • Points per question
  • Raw-to-scaled conversion
  • Whether any items are unscored

Your score report lists the exam objectives linked to questions you answered incorrectly, not the questions themselves. If you ever need a retake, that list is your study plan. Retake rules and fees are on Security+ exam cost and vouchers.

Our estimated score

How we estimate your score on the 100–900 scale

Because CompTIA doesn’t publish its conversion, we built our own estimate. It uses a standard way of setting a pass mark, the Angoff method, applied to every question in our bank.

  1. Weight each question

A multiple-choice question is worth 1 point. A PBQ is worth 2.5 points, scaled by the share of its parts you got right.

  2. Rate each question

Difficulty ratings are model estimates for a hypothetical borderline candidate, not learner data, a panel result or a measured pass probability.

  3. Find the borderline

Rating × points, added up over the whole test, sets our practice reference point. That score goes on 750.

  4. Map to 100–900

Points below the borderline spread from 100 to 750. Points above it climb from 750 to 900 at full marks.

A worked example

An example form has 86 multiple-choice questions and 4 PBQs, so 96 points are available. Say the reviewers’ ratings add up to 66 points. That’s the borderline.

Points earned (96 available)

Estimated scaled score

On this example form, 66 of 96 points (about 69%) lands on the 750 line. A form with harder questions would have lower ratings, so its line would fall lower. This illustrates our conversion, not CompTIA’s scoring or a validated prediction of passing.
The same example as a table. Below the line: 100 + 650 × points ÷ 66. Above it: 750 + 150 × (points − 66) ÷ 30.
Points earnedShare of pointsEstimated score

8184%825

An honest estimate. Our scaled score comes from our own question bank and our reviewers’ ratings. It is not CompTIA’s scoring algorithm, and it can’t promise a result on exam day. Once enough people have taken each test, we plan to check the ratings against real answers.

Readiness

What practice score means you’re ready?

CompTIA doesn’t give a figure. Use one rule that works on any scale: a clear margin above the pass line, on more than one test you haven’t seen before.

Have you cleared 750 on two different mock tests, taken in exam mode?

Yes

Book your exam

Check that no domain bar is far behind the rest and your PBQ subscore is solid, then book. Vouchers and retake rules are on Security+ exam cost.

Not yet

Drill, then retest

Drill the objectives your results list, then take a mock you haven’t seen. Retaking the same test mostly measures memory. Our Security+ study plan shows where the checkpoints go.

Signs you’re ready

  • 750+ on two different mocks
  • First attempt, exam mode
  • No domain far behind
  • A solid PBQ subscore
  • Finished inside 90 minutes

We read 2,343 “I passed” posts on r/CompTIA from 2024 to November 2026. Where passers shared practice scores, they clustered around 80%, but people passed after anything from the mid-50s to the high 90s. A raw percentage on another bank is a loose guide, which is why we report a scaled estimate instead.

FAQ

Security+ passing score FAQ

What is the passing score for Security+?

You need 750 on a scale of 100 to 900. The same pass mark applies to SY0-701 and SY0-801. It’s a scaled score, so it doesn’t stand for a fixed number of correct answers.

What percentage do you need to pass Security+?

There isn’t a published percentage. CompTIA converts your results to the 100–900 scale and doesn’t disclose how many questions you need to get right, so 750 doesn’t mean 83% (750 ÷ 900). PBQs can also earn partial credit, which makes a simple percentage even less meaningful.

How many questions are on the Security+ exam?

Up to 90 questions, in 90 minutes. They mix multiple-choice and performance-based questions, and CompTIA doesn’t publish how many of each you’ll get. See Security+ PBQs for how the performance-based ones work.

How many questions can you get wrong on Security+ and still pass?

CompTIA doesn’t say. It doesn’t disclose how many questions you need to get right or how many you answered incorrectly, and questions can carry different weights. Instead of counting misses, aim to clear 750 with room to spare on more than one practice test.

Does the Security+ score report show which questions I got wrong?

No. The score report gives your scaled score and lists the exam objectives linked to questions you answered incorrectly, not the questions themselves. That list is the best guide to what to study if you need a retake.

What practice test score means I’m ready for Security+?

CompTIA doesn’t give a figure. On our mock tests, aim to clear the estimated 750 line on more than one different test, taken in exam mode, with no domain far behind and a solid PBQ subscore. Raw percentages on other practice banks are only a loose guide.
