SY0-801 mock exams · updated November 2026
Each full-length SY0-801 practice exam is a 90-question, 90-minute CompTIA Security+® mock exam: four PBQs first, then 86 multiple-choice questions, with flag and review and, in exam mode, an estimated score on the 100–900 scale. Mock Test 1 is free, and Mocks 2–4 are free during launch. Every option is explained.

Choose a mock exam
Each mock has its own questions and matched coverage of all 27 objectives. Difficulty ratings are model estimates, not learner data, and the forms have not been statistically equated, so expect some movement between them.
Your baseline: take it in week one, before you plan your study.
Your first progress check, once you have studied about half the domains.
A check after your last domain, to confirm the gaps have closed.
A final dress rehearsal in the week before your exam.
| Mock exam | Access | Fourth PBQ | Start |

| Mock Test 2 | Free during launch | Access control matrix | Exam mode · Study mode |
| Mock Test 3 | Free during launch | A second log analysis | Exam mode · Study mode |

Every mock opens with log analysis, network placement and firewall rules PBQs. Mock Test 1 doubles as our free Security+ practice test, with its own page on what it covers.
Spacing the four mocks
Four mocks give you four honest measurements, so spread them out: a baseline, two progress checks and a rehearsal, with domain tests and drills in between. Our Security+ study plan has the week-by-week version.
Exam mode, before you study much. The total matters less than the domain bars, which tell you where to start.
After your first domains. Compare each domain bar with Mock 1, not just the total.
Every domain studied once. Anything still below its target line goes on your list for the final weeks.
Three to seven days before your exam, in one sitting, ideally at the same time of day as your booking.

Two ways to take a mock
Every mock runs in either mode, and you pick one when you start an attempt. Exam mode measures; study mode teaches.
| Detail | Exam mode | Study mode |
|---|---|---|
| Timer | 90-minute countdown, with warnings at 10 and 5 minutes | None |
| If you leave | The clock keeps running; time-out submits your saved answers | Resume any time |
| Explanations | Unlock when you submit | After each answer you check |
| Flag, confidence and review screen | Both modesSame | |
| Result | Estimated 100–900 score, domain bars, PBQ subscore | A percentage, domain bars, PBQ subscore |
Is this your first attempt at this mock?
Timed and closed-book, so the estimated score means something. Resist checking notes; a flattering score helps nobody.
A repeat attempt is no longer a fresh measurement, so use it to learn: check each answer and read every option before moving on.
Inside each mock exam
Each square is one question. Every mock opens with four performance-based questions, then 86 multiple-choice questions spread across the five domains in proportion to the SY0-801 exam objectives.
Counts are multiple-choice questions per domain. Each PBQ is worth 2.5 points, so with one PBQ in Domain 2, one in Domain 3 and two in Domain 4, each domain’s share of the 96 points lands within a point of the exam’s weights: 16%, 24%, 19%, 27% and 14%.
Your results
CompTIA doesn’t publish how it turns answers into a 100–900 score, so we built our own estimate in three steps. The full method, with a worked example, is on Security+ passing score.
A multiple-choice question is worth 1 point. A PBQ is worth 2.5, scaled by the share of its parts you got right, so a standard mock has 96 points.
Each question’s difficulty rating, a model estimate for a borderline candidate, adds up to a reference score. That score sits on 750.
Points below the line spread from 100 to 750. Points above it climb from 750 to 900 at full marks.
Exam mode adds the estimated score and the “below target” markers; everything else appears in both modes.
| Report part | What it tells you | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated score | Where this attempt lands against the 750 line on this form | Compare it across different mocks, never against a retake |
| Domain bars | Your share of points in each domain; in exam mode, marked “below target” when a domain falls under its own reference line | Start with the lowest bar in a heavy domain; Domain 4 alone is 27% of the exam |
| Objectives to drill | Up to eight objectives that cost you the most points, each linked to its drill | Run those drills before your next mock |
| Lucky guesses | Right answers you marked as a guess or flagged | Review them as if you had missed them |
| PBQ subscore | Your PBQ points, with your strongest and weakest format | Practice the weakest format with the PBQ guide |
| Question review | Every question, filtered by wrong, flagged or guessed | Read why each wrong option is wrong, not only the right answer |
An honest estimate. The score comes from our own question bank and model-estimated difficulty ratings. It is not CompTIA’s scoring algorithm, it hasn’t been calibrated against real exam outcomes, and it doesn’t predict your result.
After you submit
The hour after a mock is where most of the learning happens. Run the same four steps every time.
Filter the review to wrong, flagged and guessed questions, and read all four options on each while your reasoning is still fresh. A right answer you guessed is a gap too.
Take the ten-question drill for each objective your report lists, starting with the ones that cost the most points.
A few days later, take that domain’s test. It covers every objective in the domain, so you see whether the fix held.
A fresh mock, in exam mode. Book your exam once you clear 750 on two different mocks with no domain far behind.
Retake strategy
You can retake any mock as often as you like, but a second attempt mostly measures memory. When questions repeat, your results say how many you had seen before on this device.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Below 750 on a mock | Don’t retake it yet. Drill its flagged objectives, then take the next mock you haven’t seen. |
| You want to relearn a mock you’ve taken | Retake it in study mode and read every explanation. Treat the percentage as a review score, not a readiness signal. |
| You’ve used all four mocks | Switch to domain tests, mini tests and quick tests. Drills choose questions you haven’t seen first. |
| You didn’t pass the real exam | CompTIA allows a second attempt with no wait and requires 14 days before any later attempt. Drill the objectives on your score report first. Fees are on Security+ exam cost. |
How close is it?
Our exam simulator copies the published format as closely as we can. The difference is what happens after you submit.
| Detail | Real Security+ exam | Our mock exams |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | Up to 90 | 90 |
| Time limit | 90 minutesSame | |
| PBQs | Yes; CompTIA doesn’t publish how many | 4, at the start |
| Flag and review | Not described on CompTIA’s exam page | Flag any question; review screen before you submit |
| Score | 750 to pass on a 100–900 scale | An estimate on the same scale, in exam mode |
| Explanations | Not shown | Every option explained |
| Retakes | A new voucher each time; 14 days’ wait before a third attempt | As many as you like |
Shorter practice
When 90 minutes is too much, use our practice questions by domain: a 25 or 30-minute test for each domain, mini and quick tests of 20–25 minutes, and ten-question drills. Each block is as wide as its domain’s share of the exam.
FAQ
Four full-length SY0-801 mocks of 90 questions each, plus five domain tests, three mini tests, three quick tests and 27 objective drills. Mock Test 1 is free, and every test is free during launch.
The format is close: 90 questions in 90 minutes, a mix of multiple choice and PBQs, and a 750 pass line on a 100–900 scale. We put the four PBQs first and add a flag button and review screen; CompTIA doesn’t publish its PBQ count or order. Questions are written to the SY0-801 objectives and weighted like its domains, and exam mode gives an estimated score on the same scale.
No. Exam content is confidential under CompTIA’s candidate agreement, and using it can cost you your certification. All 552 questions are original: drafted with AI against our written benchmark, checked by three separate AI reviews and approved by the site owner.
Yes, as often as you like. A second attempt at the same mock mostly measures memory, though, so check your progress with the next mock and retake earlier ones in study mode to review the explanations.
Aim to clear the 750 line with room to spare on more than one mock, with no domain far behind the rest and a solid PBQ subscore. A raw percentage on its own isn’t a reliable guide; see how the estimated score works.
Yes, four at the start of every mock: log analysis, network placement and firewall rules, plus a fourth that changes between mocks. Each earns partial credit and ends with a step-by-step debrief. See the Security+ PBQ guide for every format.
